Year 4

Place Value

We begin Year 4 by securing our understanding of 1000s, 100s, 10s and 1s.  We learn how to round numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000 as well as positioning numbers on a number line up to the value of 10, 000.  In this first unit, we also begin to explore negative numbers and Roman numerals.

Multiplication and Division

In Year 4 we do two units focusing on multiplication and division skills.  The first unit helps Year 4 become fluent in the recall of their times tables, whilst the second unit looks at factor pairs and multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1,000.  Pupils also learn formal methods for multiplying 2 and 3-digit numbers by a 1-digit number.

Fractions and Decimals

In this unit, Year 4 begin by securing their understanding of unit and non-unit fractions.  They then develop their understanding of equivalent fractions, building on their learning from Year 3.  Pupils then progress to looking at fractions of amounts, adding/subtracting fractions and fraction/decimal equivalents.
