Year 2

Beamish

To bring our learning to life we visited Beamish, where we experienced what life was like in the Victorian times. The children throughly enjoyed this and asked some fantastic questions.

Florence Nightingale

Within this unit we learnt about one of Britain’s famous historical figures, Florence Nightingale. We discussed her life from her youth, her famous voyage to Scutari as well as the work she did in her later years to improve nursing.

Holocaust Memorial Day 2023

To mark Holocaust Memorial Day we listen to the story about Susanne Kenton and how she is a Kindertransport refugee. She was born in Berlin, where she spent the first 13 years of her life, Suzanne was driven to flee her country of birth by the rise of Nazism. As a class we made a commemorative display, using the image of a memorial flame, surrounded by positive words.

Black History Month

For Black History month Year 2 looked at the artist Alma Thomas. She was an African-American artist and was the first woman to have a solo exhibition. Her art evolved around nature because she said it was colourful and beautiful.

Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot

How did Protestant beliefs shape this period of time?

We look at bonfire night and why we celebrate it? We then discuss this period in time, including King James I and how religion played a big part in society.
