Year 4

The Baker by the Sea- Place Descriptions

Our first writing unit in Year 4 is based around the book 'The Baker by the Sea' by Paula White.  Children discover what life was like in a small coastal village after WW2 through the eyes of a young boy who questions why is dad chooses to be a baker rather than a brave fisherman.  Pupils have the opportunity to write in a variety of genres including creating their own job applications and producing a persuasive brochure which encourages tourists to visit 'The Village by the Sea'.

Tar Beach- Writing Playscripts

In our second writing unit, Year 4 explore the story 'Tar Beach' by Faith Ringgold.  Through the exploration of the text, pupils discuss issues around race, inequality and escapism.  They develop their skills at dialogue writing and learn how to structure a playscript.  Pupils have the opportunity to devise their own scripts based on events in Tar Beach.

Talk for Writing- Recount

During the Spring term, Year 4 enjoy learning how to structure a news report.  We begin the unit by using drama and story mapping to familiarise ourselves with the structure of the model text.  Children have the opportunity to develop their skills at writing a leader paragraph as well as looking at reported speech and relative clauses.
