Year 4

Sling Shot Cars

In Year 4 we design and build our own working sling shot car.  We use dowels, lolly sticks and wheels to create the chassis of the car before assembling a cardboard frame over the chassis.

Electrical Systems:  Torches

In this unit, year 4 evaluate a range of existing torches, before turning their hand to designing and building their own functional torch.

Fastenings:  Book Bags

In this unit, Year 4 design and stitch a book bag.  Children need to carefully measure and cut their chosen fabric.  They then sow their fabric together before adding on decorative details.  Finally, children attach a button fastening to complete their designs.

Adapting a Recipe:  Biscuits

Year 4 really enjoy the opportunity to learn how to follow and make a basic biscuit recipe.  They then are set the challenge to adapt the recipe to appeal to a target audience of their choice.  Pupils need to budget how much their recipe will cost as well as designing eye-catching packaging.

Structures:  Pavilions

In this unit, Year 4 explore how to make a structure more stable.  They have the opportunity to design and build a pavilion structure using a range of everyday items such as lolly sticks, straws and pipe cleaners.
