Book Bus

Nursery 3s loved going on the book bus and we were so impressed with their behaviour! They have selected lots of lovely books for us to read and listened to one of their favourite stories on the bus!

Retelling Goldilocks and the Three Bears

Nursery 3s loved focusing on traditional tales during World Book Day and were excellent at retelling the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. They used the small world characters and tuff tray to go through the story and reenact key events. 

Journey Pictures

Reception read the story ‘The Snail and The Whale’ and then talked about our own journeys that we have been on. The children drew a picture of their journey and captioned it.

Read, Write, Inc.

The Nursery 3s children have been practicing the first letter sound they have learned in Read, Write, Inc. lessons! 

Name Writing

Nursery 3s have been very interested in representing their own names recently, a lot of children have been very engaged with writing their own name. The children have been using the whiteboards and name mats to practice writing their names independently. 

Letters to Santa

Nursery 3's enjoyed writing their letters to Santa! They talked about what gifts their would like to receive from Santa and drew pictures of their items on their letters!

Reception took part in Nursery Rhyme week. Here is some of the things we got up to during the week.

Letters to Santa

Reception has been using their Phonics to write Santa a letter. They wrote what they would like for Christmas and added pictures to go with it. 

World Nursery Rhyme Week

Nursery 3's have celebrated World Nursery Rhyme Week by concentrating on different rhymes each day. On Monday they sang Jack and Jill in the water tray, filling and emptying buckets.  On Tuesday the children drew their own clocks for Hickory, Dickory dock and practiced their counting. Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes was the rhyme for Wednesday and the children enjoyed doing this really slowly and really quickly. On Thursday the children created their own boats for Row, Row, Row Your Boat, then tested them out in the water tray. On Friday the children sang Wheels On The Bus while sitting on our community bus! Here at Richmond Hill we value nursery rhymes and know that they hold so many benefits for our children!

Firework Mark Making

Nursery 3s have started our learning about bonfire night. The children have developed their early writing skills by creating marks in the firework glitter tuff tray!

Potion Recipie

The children used their phonics to create a recipe for a potion, they included things like bats, a bad cat, spiders, beetles and a rat’s bum.

 

Room on the Broom Story Stones

Nursery 3's have been retelling the story of Room on the Broom using the story stones. The children were able to recite the story, talk about key aspects and the characters within the story! 

Muddy Monday's Mark Making

Nursery 3's enjoyed mark making on leaves they collected during their muddy Monday's session. The children showed excellent pencil control and experimented with different ways of mark making, such as drawing lines, circles and faces! 

National Poetry Day

To celebrate National Poetry Day in Reception, we had a visit to our new school library, the children ate snack and listened to some poems. Then for our end of the day story we listened to some autumnal poems.

The Colour Monster

Children from Nursery 2s and 3s joined together to have a look at the Colour Monster Story. We looked at the colour monster teddies first, we talked about the different emotions and how we are all feeling today. We then read the story and the children listened really well! They had to hold up the correct colour monster as we turned each page. At the end we played a little game of guessing the Emotion. 

Roald Dahl Day

Nursery 3s celebrated Roald Dahl day by creating their own dream jars from the BFG! They used different materials such as paint markers, felt tips and glitter! We talked about some of the dreams they have for the future and talked about some of the story. The children were particularly interested in the troll characters!

Roald Dahl Day

For Roald Dahl day Nursery 2s have been learning all about The BFG. We made them all a headband with BFG ears attached. They wore these to go up on the field and catch some dreams with the fishing net. We talked about the dreams that they caught, somethings they said were sweets, chocolate, mushrooms and kings. We came inside and put our dreams into dream jars. We then had snozzcumbers (cucumber) and frobscottle (fizzy flavoured water) for snack while watching a little bit of the film.

Roald Dahl Day

In Reception, for Roald Dahl Day we looked at the book the BFG. We spoke about our dreams and made ‘dream jars’ to keep our dreams safe in. We also discussed some of Roald Dahl’s other stories and how they had been turned into films, we then watched the BFG.

Library Bus

The library bus came to school. Nursery 2s were able to visit the bus and choose some lovely stories to bring back to our classroom to share and look at with each other. The librarian on the bus read us a book with lots of nursery rhymes in. The children were very well behaved and listened really well while the lady read the story.

Syllables

The children in nursery 3's have been practicing their syllables that are in their name. Clapping them out as we took turns to say the children’s name.

World Book Day 2023

In Reception we celebrated World book Day. We were very lucky to have Taffy the storyteller in school to read us some of his own stories. In the afternoon we swapped books with our friends and enjoyed reading these together. 

World Book Day 2023

Nursery 2s  have been celebrating world book day by reading the story We're going on a bear hunt. The children have been taking part in activities linked to this book such as playing in snow, creating bear faces using paint and a fork, trying to work out who has left their foot prints in the classroom and acting out the story.

A Squash and a Squeeze Storytelling

The Nursery 3's children thoroughly enjoyed exploring the sensory squash and a squeeze tuff tray. Some of the children used the small world characters to retell the story, “it’s full in the house” “it’s a squash and a squeeze in there” “all the animals are squashed!” Others used their senses to explore the resources, they talked about the textures using vocabulary such as “rough” and “spiky.” Some of the children enjoyed tasting the different cereals as they were playing!

The Gruffalo Storytelling

The Nursery 3's children enjoyed reading different Julia Donaldson stories throughout the week leading up to world book day. The first story we read was The Gruffalo. The children used the props and characters to recite and retell the story of the Gruffalo in the tuff tray.

We're Going On A Bear Hunt

Nursery 3's have been celebrating National Storytelling Week by focusing on their favourite stories and books from our class book spine. After reading 'we're going on a bear hunt' the children retold the story using the small world characters. 

The Magic Paintbrush

In Reception we have been doing some fantastic work based around the Julia Donaldson book ‘The Magic Paintbrush’. 

So far the children have listened very carefully to parts of the story, had some amazing discussions and produced some lovely work

Shaving Foam

Nursery 3s developed their writing skills by practicing both their names and letter sounds in the shaving foam. They used the fingers as well as lollipop sticks and straws! 

'M' Potions

Nursery 3s have started our Read, Write, Inc. phonics sessions. This week we have been learning the sound “m.” Following a speed sound lesson the children made magic potions using objects beginning with m. The children enjoyed adding and mixing the items in and saying their names, practicing their letter sounds.

Early Writing Activity

A simple yet important fine motor activity. From doing a simple activity of tearing a variety of sized and textured papers the Nursery 3s children have learnt and developed their skills. During the activity the children have used their hand eye coordination, used their bilateral coordination, developed their pinch strength and arch development. They have opened their thumb web space and built up their shoulder and forearm stability. They have also strengthened their precision and refined grasp and had proprioceptive input!

 

Letters to Santa

The Nursery 3s children have made us so proud when writing their letters to Santa. Each child wrote their name independently at the bottom of their letter, then drew pictures of the items they hoped to receive!

Large Mark Making

Painting/drawing helps to develop muscle control. While working on large sheets of paper or at an easel, it helps our children to develop their large muscle control (gross motor skills.) Our Nursery 3s children are consistently given a range of different mark making activities to develop their fine motor skills, pencil control, gross motor skills, communication and imagination. 

World Nursery Rhyme Week - The Big Ship Sails

Nursery 3's enjoyed taking part in World Nursery Rhyme week. The first rhyme of the week was 'The Big Ship Sails.' The children sang along with the words and clapped out the rhythm. They brought this into their small world play by creating stories based on the rhyme, such as the ship sinking. 

Large Scale Drawing

The Nursery 3's children used the large, chunky paint pens to draw and create using large scale. The children had to stretch and use their physical skills to control the pens. The children used cross lateral movements, as well as developing their fine motor skills. They showed good control of their tools and talked about the marks they made.

Pumpkin Mark Making

The children in Nursery 3's helped to paint the leftover pumpkins in class with chalk paint, which they then used for mark making. The children drew faces, squiggles, shapes and some children even wrote their name. This activity enabled the children to develop their fine motor skills. 

Pumpkin Hammering

Nursery 3's used the different hammers to hammer golf tees into the pumpkins. Over the week we added differentiation to this activity, such as a variety of golf tee sizes and nails. By using their pincer grips the children developed their fine motor skills. 

Celebrating Diwali

The children in Nursery 3's  have enjoyed reading non-fiction books all about Diwali. After noticing the traditional dress and jewellery, the created necklaces as part of our Diwali celebrations. They painted and decorate pasta and then thread the pasta tubes on to a variety of materials, such as string, wool and ribbon, developing their fine motor skills. 

Phase 1 Listening Walk

For Mental Health Day and part of Early Years Well-Being Week, the Nursery 3s children went on a listening walk. The children talked about what they could hear such as birds tweeting, rustling leaves and the splash of water under their feet!

The Gingerbread Man Storytelling

The children have been learning about traditional tales in Nursery 3s. After listening to the story 'The Gingerbread Man' the children enjoyed retelling the story using the small world characters!

Goldilocks and The Three Bears Storytelling

The children have been learning about traditional tales in Nursery 3s. After listening to the story 'Goldilocks and The Three Bears' the children enjoyed retelling the story using the small world characters, even creating their own alternate endings! 

Name Writing

In Nursery 3s the children have been working hard to write their own names! 

Mark Making

Nursery 3s took part in mark making on the large sheets on paper, to prepare them for early writing!

Letter Formation

In reception we have been focusing really hard on our letter formation with lots of different fun activities.
