Our Place in the World
We want our pupils to grow up with a secure understanding of the local community, our national context and the wider world. Through a growing appreciation of different cultures and traditions, we want our children to develop respect; we want them to embrace and celebrate diversity and know what it takes to be a good citizen. We also want our pupils to have an awareness of global issues and to take responsibility for the environment. Our curriculum helps our pupils to improve their understanding of how the world works as well as developing their morality whilst appreciating the importance of their role in taking care of our planet. Through links with local and national organisations, including businesses, cultural organisations and faith groups, we want our children to broaden their horizons and have experiences they may otherwise not have. We recognise that trips and visiting speakers significantly enhance this aspect of the curriculum.
Educational Visits
At Richmond Hill we take pride in ensuring our children's education is enhanced by trips, experiences and visitors in to school which links with their current learning. Our curriculum is ambitious and takes into account our locality and our children. Our educational visits page showcases all of the visits that take place at Richmond Hill.
Pond Building Project 2025
School Council have been working with West Cumbria Rivers to design a pond on our school grounds. The councillors consulted with classes over what features they would like to see in their pond. Once plans were drawn up, Monica, from West Cumbria Rivers, helped the pupils dig the pond. Pupils also got to build bug houses and get involved in the planting of pond plants. We are excited to see how our pond evolves over the coming months and years!
Tree Planting 2025
To enhance our school environment and to encourage biodiversity, we have worked with RAISE to plant trees all around our school grounds. All pupils in school got involved with the digging and planting. We also planted willows. As the weather was especially dry after we did the planting, our pupils had to be responsible for watering the newly planted saplings. As our trees become established, children will be able to use them as part of their Forest School curriculum as well as enhancing our science and geography teaching provision.
Exploring the local area
At Richmond Hill our Early Years pupils can often be found exploring the local area. We want our children to develop a sense of belonging, understand community and develop areas of their learning such as understand the world, physical development and communication. Throughout the school year the children visit the post office to post letters to Santa, take Spring walks and visit different people who help us. They also regularly visit the care home, read books in the library and play on the park!
Our Local Heroes
Our Early Years children spend a half term learning all about 'People Who Help Us.' During this time, the children are lucky enough to experience visits from our local heroes. The children also take trips to areas in our locality, such as the fire station, doctors, supermarket and library!
